6. update no. 1 on my treatment progress
If you’ve seen a few of my videos, you probably know that I’m in the middle of straightening my teeth with DrSmile aligners.
For my treatment, I need a total of 10 pairs of aligners – in the meantime, I have reached the 2nd pair.
So today I wanted to give you a little update on the course of treatment. How are things going with pain, insertion, aligners in everyday life, cleaning and the app?
In this article you can read my detailed interim conclusion.
How does dental treatment with aligners actually work?
The flexible plastic dental trays (aligners) are completely transparent and therefore almost invisible to outsiders. They are slipped over the teeth, where they fit snugly and precisely.
Through constant pressure, the aligners are able to discreetly correct various tooth misalignments in just a few months. Among other things, malocclusions such as small gaps between teeth or crooked teeth can be treated.
If, on the other hand, there is a serious malocclusion (such as severe overbite and other types of malocclusion), the transparent dental splints usually reach their limits.
In order to guarantee an optimal result, the dental splint must be worn around the clock – you should only take it out for brushing your teeth and eating.
By the way, you can drink with Dr Smile aligners without any problems. However, if you consume coloring drinks, such as cola or black tea, they should not be used.
In that case, they may gradually become less transparent or even discolored. If you have drunk something sugary, it is important to clean DrSmile braces afterwards.
At DrSmile, the treatment is offered only for adults 18 years and older. This is due to the fact that the dentition (jaws and teeth) may no longer be in growth.

DrSmile Treatment: Can malocclusions be corrected with aligners?
The principle sounds simple. In the first step, you can make a free initial appointment at a partner practice of your choice on the DrSmile website. And so it goes on:
- During the initial appointment, you will receive detailed advice from a dentist or orthodontist. A 3D scan of the teeth is also created.
- Based on this, it is in turn possible to generate a simulation of the tooth correction and determine a treatment plan including costs and treatment duration.
- Only if you decide in the next step for the treatment, a contract is concluded and costs are incurred.
- The custom-made aligners are then delivered directly to your home.
- Invisible braces must be worn at least 22 hours a dayand changed every two weeks.
- You will be accompanied by experts via an app and the dental correction will be monitored throughout.
- On average, the treatment lasts four to nine months.
- The teeth are then stabilized with a retainer splint to prevent them from shifting back to their original position.
So far so good – but does it all work so smoothly in practice?
DrSmile costs: How good is the price-performance ratio?
DrSmile costs range from 1790 euros to 3190 euros. Only in very rare cases the price can exceed this range.
However, if this is the case for you, you will be explicitly informed about this before the start of the treatment.
DrSmile treatment can be paid either once or in installments. Unfortunately, health insurance does not usually cover the costs.
This is how the three price levels are currently structured:
One-time payment | Installment payment | |
S | £1,390 | |
M | £1,790 | |
L | £2,090 |

DrSmile experiences at the rating portal eKomi
When searching for DrSmile experiences on the Internet, rating portals are a good place to start. One of them is eKomi.
The independent online rating service provider helps companies generate and manage transactional ratings only .
Dr Smile and his invisible braces get here a overall rating of 4.6/5 points (as of January 2023).
There are already a total of 1,835 DrSmile reviews, of which 94.82% were positive, 2.51% neutral and 2.67% negative.
Positive Dr Smile experience: What is praised by users?
On the eKomi platform, patients especially praise the partner practices visited at the start of treatment. The friendliness of the staff, the uncomplicated procedure, the short waiting time, and the professional advice were positively highlighted.
Most users felt in good hands during their initial appointment and report positively on their DrSmile experience. Including 3D scan, the preliminary examination usually took less than half an hour.
You can find even more experiences with DrSmile on the consumer portal Trustpilot. Here, many comments positively highlight the telephone support, the app, the simple processing, as well as service and advice.
Many users whose treatment process is more advanced are also very satisfied. The quality of the aligners, the relatively painless treatment and the good treatment result are often praised here.
The Dr Smile experiences of many patients also show that wearing aligners has other positive aspects:
For example, many users report that they snack less because they don’t want to keep taking out their dental splint. In addition, increased attention is paid to dental hygiene.

Negative experiences with DrSmile: What do patients criticize?
Of course, we also don’t want to let the negative experiences with DrSmile fall under the table here. When doing your research, however, you should always keep in mind that users tell about bad experiences much more often than good ones.
Occasionally, patients report that the teeth have shifted again after completion of the treatment. This makes it clear how important the retention phase is.
This is because the teeth that have loosened during treatment with DrSmile are stabilized here.
By the way, in addition to loose retainer braces, DrSmile also offers fixed retainers that remain in the mouth permanently. You can find more information about DrSmile retainers here.
Among the negative DrSmile experiences, there are also complaints about the fact that additional costs are due for the follow-up treatment.
However, this so-called refinement is usually free and part of the satisfaction guarantee that DrSmile gives. Additional costs are incurred only if not all the conditions specified in the contract in advance are met.
These include, for example, regularly uploading photos via the Dr Smile app or booking and keeping appointments that are necessary for treatment.
Only in exceptional cases the treatment can be more expensive. For example, if you opt for a fixed retainer instead of a loose retainer.
Other negative experiences with DrSmile include issues with splint shipping and customer service, as well as communication in general.

Testimonials about DrSmile dental trays, teeth straightening and aftercare.
In addition to the classic evaluation portals, you will also find many blogs and vlogs online in which patients report in detail about their DrSmile experiences.
For example, in this article, one of the authors of the blog Louise et Hélène talks in great detail about the positive and negative experiences she had during the correction of her malocclusion.
Instead of fixed braces, she opted for Dr Smile aligners and has not regretted the move. At the end of the article, she concludes that both the appointment at her Dr Smile Partner practice and the course of treatment were very positive.
However, she also points out that the Dr Smile treatment requires a lot of patience from users and the pressure pain is definitely present in the first few days after insertion.
All in all, however, the author is satisfied with the treatment and is now happy to have straight teeth.
Conclusion on DrSmile experience: Do the aligners deliver what they promise?
The DrSmile experiences of former and current patients make it clear that discreet tooth correction with aligners is definitely possible.
Invisible dental trays actually work well in many cases and it is not an empty promise.
Of course, there are not only users who have had positive experiences. But that’s likely to be the case with any business – online or offline.
Teeth and jaws can easily hurt, it can press uncomfortably during insertion and the wearing time of 22 hours per day actually requires a lot of discipline.
However, minor inconveniences can hardly be avoided with any orthodontic treatment and if you can smile at yourself in the mirror with straight teeth after the treatment is completed, it was actually always worth the effort.
Dr Smile also offers a satisfaction guarantee, so the first follow-up treatment is always free if you are dissatisfied. All costs for the necessary splints are covered by DrSmile.

FAQs about experience with DrSmile
We hope that we could help you with our DrSmile review. Here we answer a few more of the most frequently asked questions about your experience with DrSmile.
You can find more articles and information about DrSmile here.
For whom is DrSmile not suitable?
DrSmile can treat mild to moderate dental malocclusions. Aligners, on the other hand, reach their limits in the case of complex malocclusions and malocclusions.
How long do you have to wear DrSmile?
The aligners must be worn for at least 22 hours a day and should only be removed for eating and oral hygiene.
Which is better: DrSmile or PlusDental?
Just like DrSmile, PlusDental was acquired by the Straumann Group in 2022. Due to the merger, PlusDental’s product is now identical to DrSmile’s.
Which is better: Invisalign or DrSmile?
The invisible braces from DrSmile are significantly cheaper than those from Invisalign and thus offer the better price-performance ratio. However, they can only be used for uncomplicated anterior corrections.
Invisalign aligners, on the other hand, can correct up to 90 percent of all orthodontic cases. Accordingly, they are suitable for serious malocclusions of teeth and jaw.
Are aligners dangerous?
As a rule, tooth correction with aligners does not involve any risks. However, before and during treatment, the condition of the teeth should be examined regularly.
This allows early detection of cavities, inflammation or other problems that might otherwise be aggravated by wearing the dental splints.
